HELP! Calculations :/

Postby Andrewpharbo » Feb 03 2017 1:33 pm

Hi guys I'm a new grad student and I'm completely lost with drug calculations- please help!!
I am giving a 30g mouse the drug Amlodipine which comes in 500mg crystalline solid. It says that the soulubilty of amlodipine is 12.5mg/ml in DMSO. Our DMSO is 100%. The dose I want to give these mice is 20mg/kg IP. how do I go about calculating this. From measuring out the crystalline solid to reconstituting it to dosing it. I'm so lost, I fee like a dummy!!

Thanks!!!

You cannot be left unsupervised when dealing with animals, especially from an ethical point of view.
So I would strongly suggest you demand local supervision.

It's not an issue with actual animal care and handling. It's with methods.

Do I need to write that giving the wrong dose to an animal - possibly making its sacrifice vain and/or causing it to suffer unnecessarily - is an ethical issue.
You shouldn't proceed without knowing what you're doing, and IMHO you do need supervision ("I'm so lost").

All animal experimental protocols should be preapproved by IRB.

Thanks for the correction. I never used animals in my research, so I thought IRB controls every protocol.
